A3 - Documentation

1. Pavilion in Shanghai Expo 2010

Scale:125mm(L)x250mm(W)x115mm(H)
Material: Basswood, Acrylic
Technique: Laser cutting, Painting, Sanding

Step 1: Digital Model Making

The digital modeling of this fabrication is processed and achieved in Google SketchUp Pro.
I divided the whole model into four parts. The first part is the beam in the shape of DouGong, the second part is the floor section, the third part is the 9 core columns with full height on each side, and the fourth part is the top roof. It is hoped that the roof can be flexibly installed in a reasonable way to better observe the relationship between columns and beams on the facade.

Step 2: Digital file for laser cutting

The digital file for laser cutting is processed and achieved in Auto CAD. Base to the idea of model making, arrange the required wood shape on the A1 plywood.

Step 3: Painting

Traditional Chinese red is a very important architectural element, I chose the appropriate color in Bunnings, and also brought some brush.

Brush each cut piece of wood with red paint and let dry completely for about 20 minutes. Moreover, make sure that the brush is in a damp condition so that the painting is more even and smooth.

Step 4: Assembly

1. In the early stage, take full account of the thickness of the material.
2. Label the different parts.
3. Always from "Trunk" to edges.

Base on the previous idea, the roof part and the pillar part were put together and then put together.

2. Vessel (TKA)

Scale:165mm(L)x165mm(W)x190mm(H)
Material: Plastic
Technique: 3D printing, Sanding

Step 1: Digital Model Making

Due to the lack of relevant specific data, I built a digital model by cross-comparing a large number of relevant data.

Step 2: Try and Adjust the Digital Model

On the main skeleton of the blue, the red exterior and the green interior are extended.

Step 3: 3D printing

The digital model is converted to STL. File, and input into FlashPrint software to adjust the size and location of the model. After optimizing the orientation and location of the model, the bracings are generated to allow the printer to builds the model successfully.

Step 4: Take support away & Sanding

The picture shows the 3d-printed model without pulling off the supports. The model needs to be refined by cleaning all the supports.

3. CHURCH OF  THE LIGHT

Scale:396mm(L)x195mm(W)x110mm(H)
Material: Plaster, Plywood
Technique: Laser cutting, Casting, Sanding

Step 1: Digital Mould Making

Due to the whole church is composed of straight walls, so I was going to the wall plaster casting out. But because of considering the weight and the stability of the structure, in order to more clearly have an indoor perspective so at the top of the roof with a layer of transparent acrylic as. Therefore, using Auto CAD to draw the required solid wall and build a mold for casting.

Step 2: Physical Mould Making

But since the long wood boards are about 40CM long, they can be distorted by temperature or humidity. The thickness of the material must be taken into account when assembling.

Step 03: Preparing Plaster

Slowly place the plaster in the water, stirring constantly, until the mixture has a creamy quality. And add watercolor pigment to make the color of plaster more close to the real situation.

I concluded that there are several character changes in the process of plaster change. First, there are many bubbles due to the air, and then there are spontaneous bubbles coming out from the bottom. Finally, the liquid becomes more solid.

Step 04: Casting

Casting on the mould of each wall. Because at the time of casting, plaster condition is different, so the time of the process depends on the solidification condition.

Step 05: Take Out the Model & Sanding

It is necessary to flatten the surface of the model after casting, especially the upper side of the mold

Facade 1:200

The China pavilion is the main pavilion of the 2010 Shanghai world expo. The building contains many elements with Chinese characteristics and traditions. One of the most important elements in this model is the DouGong structure used in traditional wooden structures.

The structure of Dou Gong

The shape of the China pavilion is like a big hat, and the pillars fit together, getting bigger and bigger. The entire model is stabilized by beams and columns alone.

Detail

I made a 1:200 profile model to study the relationship between his structure and shape.

2. Vessel (TKA)

Scale:165mm(L)x165mm(W)x190mm(H)
Material: Plastic
Technique: 3D printing,Sanding

Repeating elements take on different forms through the logical organization. In this building, I mainly study the changes of forms, connections between different levels, and three-dimensional modeling.

3. CHURCH OF  THE LIGHT

Scale:396mm(L)x195mm(W)x110mm(H)
Material: Plaster, Plywood
Technique: Laser cutting, Casting, Sanding

The combination of concrete and church subverts the grand image of the classical church. The cross formed by light and shadow gives people a visual shock. Therefore, in this model, we mainly explore the relationship between light and architecture, and the correct expression of concrete materials in the model making.

FACADE

I repeatedly compared several materials. The effect of plaster is closer to the effect of the building itself, and it is easier to control. The mold was first made of plywood and then cast in plaster.
